Do I need a permit for radon mitigation in Iowa City?
Short answer: Iowa requires radon mitigation specialists to be IDPH-certified, but most Iowa City jurisdictions do not require a separate building permit for installation. We handle any required notifications as part of the install.
In Iowa, the contractor performing the work must be certified by the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH). Iowa is one of only a handful of states with mandatory mitigator licensure. Anyone offering radon mitigation in Iowa City should be able to show you their IDPH credential — and you should ask.
For the actual install, most Iowa City-area jurisdictions do not require a separate building permit, since radon mitigation is considered minor mechanical work and doesn't alter structure. Some HOAs have aesthetic rules about exterior pipe routing that we'll work around.
What we handle on every Iowa City install:
- IDPH-required reporting (yes, mitigation installs are tracked at the state level)
- HOA notification if applicable
- Any electrical permit required for the fan circuit (rare; usually we tie into existing circuits)
- Code-compliant venting that satisfies International Residential Code (IRC) Appendix F
You shouldn't need to file anything yourself.
